A couple of years ago I was in a class at Utah State University taught by Dr. Rhees. The class was Foundations of Curriculum. I learned a lot in that class. What he taught stuck me as important and has remained with me. One of those ideas was a turning point for me in how I perceive the education of students, especially young students. He talked about the three pillars of education: The teacher, the student, and the parents. Everyone knows that the teacher is an important piece of the education puzzle. A teacher can make or break a student's year. It is also understood that the student is an important part of that puzzle, too. Remove the student, and you remove the necessity of even having a school. But the parent? Obviously, the parents and other members of the student's family are part of their life. But really, what is a parents role in the education of student? It's more than you think.
Parent's are the first teachers a child will ever have. Mom and Dad, your role is critical! You have immense power over the outcome of your child's success in school. Your presence in the education of your child is fundamental to their success. That Third Pillar is you. Without you, your child doesn't stand a chance. Here, at The 3rd Pillar, we discuss Intentional Parenting and your role as it relates to the education of your children.
